The smaller your company is, the more likely it is that you might think you do not need to make a logo for yourself. After all, those are only for the massive corporations, not for the everyday business owner.
I cannot stress enough the importance of a strong logo. This is a great tool to get people to remember who you are. Remembering a logo is going to be a lot easier than remembering a full name, especially if your company name is not particular short. When it comes to something like a custom business card, people are more likely to take notice of an effective logo than a long company name.
To give an example, a friend of mine runs a company that primarily works with the railroad industry. His company name happens to be particularly long, so to compensate for this, his logo is his company’s initials with the image of a stylized train rail behind it, all enclosed in a circle.
When you pick up his full color business cards the first thing your eye is drawn towards is the company logo. Another important feature in the logo is that the image of the rail is in black ink, while the initials of his company are in red. To further emphasize this point, his company name also has the first letters of each word in red as well.
This is not the most complicated full color business card out there. The details behind his card are simple and basic, yet they work because the logo is strong and easy to remember.
Now, not everyone is going to have an image that a person can readily identify with their company. A business consulting firm would be hard pressed to find a good picture that people would immediately connect with their industry, which is why so many companies use their initials as the company logo.
No matter what your industry is, just remember to keep your logo simple enough that people will be able to remember it and easily identify it. The more complex your logo becomes the harder it will be for people to keep it straight in their minds.
You also want to make sure that your logo is designed so that the size of it can easily be altered. After all, your logo will be on more than just your custom business cards. You want to be able to make it large enough to fit on the side of your building and small enough that you could use it in your letterhead. Make sure that the look of the logo remains the same no matter what size it is.
Both a business card and a logo are meant to get you remembered. Both will work even better if they’re used in unison.
